“Finding the Fun” in AI-Powered Games

There has been much discussion about the potential for generative AI to create new forms of gameplay and novel games powered by AI. Gaming companies have spun out subsidiary studios to develop AI games. Yet, few of these games have reached players at scale or seen widespread success. So what have developers actually tried so far and where are the unexplored areas of opportunity? What are best practices to ensure that AI games are actually fun and not just flashy tech demos?
