Dr. Ray Muzyka - Founder and CEO, Threshold Impact Ltd (www.thresholdimpact.com), an investment company focusing on sustainable, profitable impact investing in technology, new media, medical innovation and social entrepreneurs.
Dr. Muzyka co-founded BioWare (http://www.bioware.com) in the early 1990s with the other co-founder of BioWare, Dr. Greg Zeschuk, after they earned their medical degrees at the University of Alberta.
After graduation, Muzyka practiced ER medicine for two years full time, but medicine became more and more a part-time 'hobby' over the following years, with his second career through the remainder of the 1990s and beyond leading BioWare, helping navigate the path forward as its CEO as it rapidly increased in size and international scope of distribution.
BioWare received a major private equity investment from Elevation Partners in 2005 (http://www.elevation.com/downloads/News_11-3.pdf) which enabled further growth to new locations and a ramp up to self-fund distribution and development. After selling BioWare to Electronic Arts in early 2008 (http://www.gamespot.com/news/ea-buying-bioware-pandemic-for-860m-6180818), Muzyka became GM/SVP of the BioWare Label at EA in addition to his CEO role at BioWare, with the BioWare Label by 2012 comprised of eight BioWare studios and 1400+ full time staff worldwide.
In October 2012 Muzyka announced his retirement from BioWare/EA after two decades in videogames (http://blog.bioware.com/2012/09/18/from-ray-muzyka/), with his third 'career chapter' focused on mentoring and investing in entrepreneurs in technology, entertainment/new media and medicine, and social entrepreneurship/impact investment.
Dr. Muzyka is also a director and co-Chairman of CodeBaby Corp (http://www.codebaby.com), a leader in web-based virtual agent technology which enables companies to increase online engagement, helping drive revenues and reduce support costs.
Muzyka obtained an MD from the University of Alberta in 1992 and an MBA from the University of Western Ontario (Ivey School of Business) in 2001.
Dr. Muzyka is a member of YPO and the A100, a Director on the Board of Trustees of the Stollery Health Foundation, was on the board (2001-2008) of the AIAS, and was inducted into the AIAS' Hall of Fame in 2011. He was named into Canada's Top 40 under 40 in 2001, received Ernst & Young's 2001 Entrepreneur of the Year award and the BDC 1997 Young Entrepreneur of the Year award, among other awards.
